The answer is, that it depends. It depends on your maturity and your parents’ trust in you. Luckily, the trend these days is leaning towards trusting our teens with more independence and responsibility when it comes to their appearance. That being said, there are some parents (and school dress codes) that have stricter rules about makeup. There may be restrictions as to when or where you can wear it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock a full face from time to time! Read on for tips on how old you need to be to wear makeup safely and responsibly.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Wear Makeup?

Before you begin, check with your parents about what products are okay for you to use. There are tons of great options out there – so don’t be afraid to ask your parents what’s okay! From there, it just comes down to following the steps below:

    1. Wearing makeup is a personal decision and should only be done by you. It’s a big step and can be scary – but start small and work your way up in steps.
    2. Choose a makeup brand that is suitable for younger teens (or older teens with sensitive skin).
    3. Read the directions on the box before you begin using!
    4. Take it slow – don’t go full face right away!
    5. Let your skin get used to the products before applying more makeup (even if it looks pretty).
    6. Be sure to wash your face after using any type of makeup (including kid-friendly)
    7. If you have questions or concerns, talk with a doctor or dermatologist

How Old Do You Have To Be To Wear Foundation?

    1. The age at which you have to start wearing foundation depends a bit on your skin type.
    2. If you have dry skin, you can probably go foundation-free.
    3.  But if you have oily or combination skin, you might want to use a light BB or CC cream instead of a heavy-duty foundation.
    4.  If your skin is very sensitive, it might be a good idea to skip foundation altogether.
    5. If you’re not sure whether you should be wearing foundation or not, check out your skin tone in different lighting and discover what works best for you.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Wear Eyeshadow And Eyeliner?

    • Once you’re old enough to wear foundation, you’re old enough to wear eyeshadow and eyeliner, so you can pretty much start at any age with those.
    • Keep in mind that you might want to start with a very light hand with those two.
    •  If you have super oily skin, you might want to skip the shadow and use a light eyeliner instead.
    •  Oily skin types are generally not good candidates for eye shadow.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Wear Mascara And Eyebrow Pencil?

    1. Mascara and eyebrow pencils can be used at any age. If your parents want you to wait until you’re older before you start using those two, they’ll probably let you know.
    2. Eyebrow pencils are a great way to fill out light, sparse brows. If you’re worried about accidentally over-plucking your brows, penciling them in is a good way to get a fuller, more flirty look while you grow them out again.
    3. Mascara, on the other hand, can help give you thicker and longer lashes while you wait for your own to grow out.
    4. If you’re worried about accidentally over-plucking your lashes, mascara is a great way to get a fuller lash look while you let your own regrow.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Wear Lipstick And Lip Gloss?

    • Once you’re old enough to wear lipstick and lip gloss, you can start wearing them whenever you want. Before you apply lipstick, make sure your lips are clean and exfoliated.
    •  You should also make sure they aren’t chapped or super dry before you apply lipstick, or it’s going to look cray-cray and make your lips look a lot larger than they actually are.
    •  If you’ve got chapped or super dry lips, you can apply a light coat of lip balm before applying lipstick.
    •  This will help keep your lips moisturized and prevent them from looking cray-cray.

When Do You Need Your Parent’s Permission To Wear Makeup?

    • Keep in mind that you should always ask your parents for permission before you start wearing makeup.
    •  It’s a pretty easy thing to do and can go a long way towards building trust and communication.
    •  If you don’t ask for permission and start wearing makeup anyway, you might jeopardize their trust in you. If you’re under 18, you need your parents’ permission to wear makeup.
    • This is especially true if you’re going to be wearing heavy makeup like eye shadow, lipsticks, etc. When you’re under 18 and wearing “adult” makeup, you might get stopped at the airport by security.
    • This is because older passengers can’t bring liquids over 3 ounces (or 100 milliliters) onto the plane. Makeup that’s over 3 ounces is technically a liquid, so you might get stopped.

Tips For Safely Wearing Makeup At Any Age

When wearing your first few layers of makeup, you might want to start with a light hand.

    •  If you’re using brushes and brushes, be sure to clean them regularly.
    •   If you’re using a liquid foundation, be sure to apply it with a sponge and not your fingers. Fingers are bacteria farms, and it’s easy to transfer bacteria from your fingers to your face. This can cause breakouts and redness.
    •  If you’re using powder to set your foundation, be sure to use a fresh, soft brush and tap off the excess.
    •   If you’re wearing eye shadow, be sure to use a clean brush and tap off the excess.
    •   If you’re wearing lipstick, be sure to exfoliate your lips. This will help the color last longer and prevent the dreaded lip line.
    •  If you’re using eyeliner, always go for a pencil. Liquid and gel liners are harder to use and easy to screw up.
    •  If you’re using blush, be sure to use a clean brush and tap off the excess. Also, always remember to apply blush to the apples of your cheeks first, and then blend out.
    •   If you’re using a highlighter, remember that less is more. Highlighting powders are best applied in small swipes.
    •  If you’re using setting spray, be sure to shake the bottle first, and then apply it to your face in small sprays.
