The Stories That Shape Marquette County.
Your Voice.
Your Community.
The Marquette Tribune.

The Marquette Tribune is an online newspaper for Marquette County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We report on Marquette, Ishpeming, Negaunee, Marquette Township, Harvey, Gwinn, Big Bay and the smaller towns in between, and now and then on stories in neighboring Alger and Baraga counties when they matter to people here.

Who runs the Tribune

The Tribune is an independent publication with a small staff. Jessica Morgan is the editor. She assigns stories, edits everything our reporters file and decides what goes on the site. Michael Anderson covers business, Ryan Mitchell covers the outdoors, public affairs and writes opinion pieces, and Stephanie Brooks covers sports. Each writer has a page with a short bio and a list of their stories. The full list is on our masthead.

We are not connected to Marquette University in Milwaukee or to its student newspaper, which carried the Marquette Tribune name for many years. This Tribune is about Marquette, Michigan.

What we cover

Most of what we write is plain local news: county board and township votes, schools, development and closings, public safety, weather on the lake and the roads. Business coverage follows the mines, the hospital, NMU and the shops downtown. Sports means Northern Michigan University and the high schools. Outdoors covers the trails, the DNR and Lake Superior.

People & Profiles is a running series on the people, places and companies that built the county, from Peter White and Amos Harlow to the Tilden Mine and the Lower Harbor ore dock. Those pieces draw on published histories, public records and archive photos, and we credit the photos in each story.

Opinion pieces run in the Opinion section and are labeled as opinion. They are kept separate from news reporting.

Press releases

We also publish a selection of press releases distributed by PR Newswire. These are written by the companies and organizations that issue them, not by Tribune staff. Each one carries a “Press release” label and the PR Newswire byline at the top of the page, and links in them are marked as sponsored.

How the Tribune started

The Tribune began as a way to put more local reporting in one place for a county where a lot of news now travels by word of mouth and Facebook groups. It started with community news, business and sports, then added the outdoors section, the opinion page and the profiles series. It is still small, and we would rather run fewer stories that are right than a lot of stories that are thin.
